The problem
Design writing tends to split in two: long theory nobody finishes, or quick tips with nothing behind them. I wanted a place for short, opinionated pieces about the parts of the job that last: research, typography, accessibility, leadership and the business of design.
Constraints
A blog about readability has to be easy to read. That meant comfortable line lengths, generous leading and real type sizes on every screen.
It also had to stay easy to publish every week. One post every Monday only works if the format is short and the structure does not need rethinking each time.
Approach
Every post is short, a two or three minute read, and opens with a one paragraph summary of its point.
Posts are numbered like issues of a publication, filed under one of four sections, Technology, Design, Business and Lead Loud (leadership and motivation), and tagged by topic. Each one ends with its category, topic, publish date, read time and issue number, followed by more posts from the same section.
Obsessing over details so users don’t have to.
What I built
Pixel Hunter ships as a fast Next.js site: a featured post and the latest issues on the home page, a page for each section, the full archive and the resource libraries, all in one consistent editorial system of condensed headlines, black and white photography and a single yellow accent.
